The Paul Chen Antiqued Solingen Main Gauche by Hanwei is historically based on models of 17th century main gauche daggers of Germanic ancestry. The Antiqued Solingen Main Gauche is an excellent rendition of the timely originals. The Antiqued Solingen Main Gauche is an authentically styled parrying weapon, with a blade constructed of forged high carbon steel , a stainless steel hilt for reduced maintenance and is equipped with a leather scabbard.
The Solingen Main Gauche antiqued version features a hilt finish , developed by CAS Hanwei , that provides for a museum quality patina to be applied to stainless steel while the non-corroding properties of the steel are retained. This finish is very attractive and gives an authentic appearance to the gauche.
This main gauche and the matching rapier blade produced by Hanwei are now interchangeable with blunted Practical Sparring blades , which are designed for safety in rapier sparring.
The Main Gauche , or left hand dagger , was often used with the rapier sword , providing an added dimension in both offense and defense. The Schools of Fence which proliferated in Europe during the 17th century taught the use of the two weapons in combination. The Main Gauche would often match the Rapier in styling, while incorporating features which maximized the effectiveness of the dagger.
This fully functional main gauche is tailored to meet the demands of re-enactment and stage combat.
