The Cross of Santiago, is the emblem of the military/monastic order of Santiago (Santiaguista) also known as Order of Saint James of Compostela. The origin of this order was in the kingdom of Leon Spain in the 12th century. Their name comes from the patron saint of Spain, James the Greater, under whom protection Galicians' and Asturians' Christians started to fight the Muslims in Spain in the 9th century.
|
The Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's Hospital in Jerusalem is a German Roman Catholic religious order. It was formed to aid Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals to care for the sick and injured. Its members have commonly been known as the Teutonic Knights, since they also served as a crusading military order during the Middle Ages. The membership was always small and whenever the need arose, volunteers or mercenaries augmented the military forces.
|
The Hospitallers, known officially as "Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem," was founded in Jerusalem during the first Crusade by the Italian friar Gerardo da Sasso to assist the pilgrims travelling the Holy Land. His successor, Raymond du Puy, finished the work with the creation of an armed branch composed of crusader knights. It has been known also as "Knights of Rhodes", and as the "Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta." It was at first a charitable Order, while the Templars was from the first a military one. With the fall of the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291, the Knights retired to the island of Rhodes. In 1522 the Turks finally took Rhodes, and the Hospitallers removed to Malta. Here they remained till 1793, when Napoleon took Malta, and added it to the French Republic. This ended it as a sovereign power. While the Knights had to leave Malta, shorn of their old power and great wealth, they still continued on in different countries. The Knights took with them from Malta their precious relics--chief among them being the hand of St. John the Baptist, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Pherlemon, and a fragment of the true cross.

The Templar Knight Great Helm Helmet by Marto of Toledo Spain , also called Pot Helm, was the typical helmet used by the crusaders and by the Templars in particular for the whole duration of the Crusades. Its name comes from the shape very similar to a pot and due to the necessity to offer the best possible protection to the head. However, the view capabilities were greatly reduced letting possible only the frontal view and for this reason this helm was used also by cavalry for charges or tourneys. This model is made in steel enriched by a brass cross used to denote the knight affiliation to the army of God and by a series of traceries in the shape of crosses useful to improve the air access inside the helm. The helm comes with a practical metallic display stand.

The Damascene Templar Cross Keychain by Marto of Toledo Spain is decorated with 24K Gold damascene artwork on one side. It features the Vichiers' (Renaud de Vichiers was the 19th Grand Master of the Knights Templar, from 1250 to 1256) seal: SIGILLUM MILITUM XPISTI. Although the phrase is written using the Latin alphabet, the first two letters of Christ's name are the Greek XP (Chi Rho) rather than the Latin CHR. The XP symbol's origin lies in the early roots of Christianity, but came into popular use after the Emperor Constantine had a vision of it and, according to legend, converted to Christianity in the early fourth century. From the time of Constantine, it became one of the most significant symbols of Christianity, surpassed only by the cross itself. Its early associations with the military made it the more apt of the two symbols for the Templars. In fact the Chi Rho can also be seen on the shields of the knights. Another useful collectible item essential for all the fans of this famous order.
