Its original purpose was to protect pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago and drive back the Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula.

Following the death of Grand Master in 1493 Alonso de Cardenas, the Catholic Monarchs joined the Order of the Crown of Spain and Pope Adrian VI joined forever Maestrazgo Santiago to the crown in 1523.
